Kensington Market & Five Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

Headed down to Kensington Market the other day with a friend, and my daughter came along. It wasn’t quite as colourful (or warm, of course!) as our summer visit to the market, but it was fun. We had some Dim Sum first and then wandered around the market for a bit.

Rebecca checks out the colourful wares, and wishes she hadn’t spent all her money so she could buy something:

There are some weird things to see in the market, like this bin of gas masks:

But some yummy sights too, like these colourful cupcakes shot through the store window:

Shot these colourful glasses in a large market there, think it’s called the Blue Banana Market?

Rebecca, giving me the evil eye:

Enough with the pictures Mom!

5 Minute Chocolate Mug Cake

Later Rebecca and I tried out this cake that you cook in the microwave (see recipe below) that my mother emailed me quite a while ago.

Rebecca added both white chocolate and chocolate chips to her mug cake:

AND then added some mint chocolate chip ice cream on the side as well!

Can I recommend this cake? Well, I’m not sure, I only had a taste but Rebecca seemed to enjoy it! (And my son, seeing these photos, wants to try making it too!)

Here’s the recipe:

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
  • a small splash of vanilla extract
  • 1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (not sure how strong our microwave is, we cooked it for the 3 minutes and it turned out fine). The cake will rise over the top of the mug (depending on the size of the mug), but don’t be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

Enjoy!

Yummy pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and more

Made the yummy slow cooker pulled pork a couple of weeks ago (see link to the recipe here).

You’ll know it’s done when it pulls apart very easily:

It’s much yummier once you add the bbq sauce though!

Asked the kids what they wanted, one wanted mashed potatoes, the other brown rice. Did a MUCH better job with the mashed potatoes this time, last time I didn’t add enough butter & milk, this time the kids kept going back for more and more:

Espresso and Lunch Today

I continue with the food photography, being inspired by smittenkitchen. Can’t wait to photograph the cookies the kids and I will be baking this weekend…

Another espresso shot, taken with the 50 1.4. Even though it’s a brighter lens, I think the 100 2.8 macro does a better job. (just wish it was a 1.4!)

As I was preparing SavvyMom’s DELICIOUS Red Grapefruit and Avocado Salad, for my lunch, I thought a slice of the grapefruit would look great with some backlighting (shot with the 85 1.2 wide open):

I have made a few modifications to the recipe. I use Romaine lettuce, as it’s a bit healthier and lasts a bit longer in the crisper drawer then bib lettuce. I also add freshly grated parmesan cheese (as we actually did at the EatSavvy shoot), and I omit the red onion (not a huge fan of raw onion):

Here’s the completed salad, definitely a new fav!

Hope everyone else had as yummy a lunch as I did! 🙂

I am completely smittened with smittenkitchen, great food and great photography! And it’s motivated me to photograph some food around my kitchen.

Freshly roasted coffee beans:

Out and About with my Son on a Sunday Afternoon

Noah and I headed downtown last Sunday for an event, and I actually took my DSLR along for the ride, with my fav lens (85 1.2) attached.

Rather then walking through the slush we decided to try waiting for the Avenue Road bus…fortunately it wasn’t too far behind schedule:

It was dark, but caught this shot of Noah in Museum Subway stop:

I’m sure kids of photographers get a bit tired of “just look this way for a sec…”:

I was LOVING the wet sidewalks, they look so cool with all the reflections and bokeh:

My handsome young man!:

Couldn’t resist capturing the wet pavement and Queen St. West crowd:

Hoping to have another blog post up tomorrow!! Off to make a yummy Red Grapefruit and Avocado Salad for dinner (see the blog post below) now.
